Confusing question. I am going to assume by’doing Nothing’ you mean no exercise.




Exercise is a very ‘nice to have’ in weight loss but is not mandatory. What is mandatory is that you get into calorie deficit , that is to say you consume more calories than you eat. 



This essentially means you have to control how much you eat and drink, portion control, and what you eat , nutrition or if you like, diet.

If you choose any of the well known and well publicised and known diets , they will in my experience work if you follow them precisely . My own favourite is the Holcombe diet by/t I have followed others and they work.





Reading the books will help you set goals which is vital but they will not help in providing a support group of friends who you can work with and help you when things get tough and they will from time to time.





An alternative is to join Weight watchers, who with their branded food products and regular meetings cover all facets of the weight losing process. This approach is frequently cited as the most successful weight loss approach.





In my view the major downside of the above approaches is that once you achieve your goal you are forced to continue using these approaches since the knowledge of the basics of weight loss is not transparently obvious and if you stop using them and hope to continue to remain at your achieved target weight your chances of keeping that weight are statistically low. 




How many times do we someone say that diet x does not work , it got me to the target weight but then I put all the weight back on.





What people fail to realise is that weight loss is a life style choice and life means life. This is the reason I have experienced and used many diets but until I finally realised that the selected diet will not work unless I committed to a change of lifestyle I was on the treadmill of yo-yo dieting.





So to make that lifestyle change, I recommend to add to any of the above a personal control element of counting


 calories . To do this I further recommend you use a computer app like MyFitnessPal which will help you count alories, set up targets and provide a framework for including a support. It will provide an umbrella management system to move from diet to diet .




I personally like to do my own food choices but combine this with a 5:2 starving diet when I need to be in weight loss mode as opposed weight management mode.
